Hansa Tankers' operation was established in May 2010 to build an independent pool operator for stainless steel tonnage. Since its inception, the pool has grown from an initial 3 vessels to today's 28 vessels. In 2016, the company's gross freight turnover was USD 258 million versus USD 263 million in 2015.

In 2012, Hansa Tankers established the Midgard partnership for ownership of six vessels.
